Conguillio

Conguillío is a national park located in the Araucanía Region, in southern Chile, that looks like something out of a fairy tale. There you’ll find forests of araucaria trees (ancient trees native to the area), deep blue lagoons, and the imposing Llaima Volcano, one of the most active in the country.

As you enter Conguillío National Park, you’re greeted by a landscape full of contrasts:

  • Araucaria forests where trees can live for over a thousand years, mixed with coigües and lengas.
  • Lakes and lagoons such as Laguna Verde or Lake Conguillío, whose waters reflect the surrounding volcanoes and mountains.
  • Trails that lead to lookouts with panoramic views, hidden waterfalls, and expanses of solidified lava where you can sense the power of volcanic activity.

The snow-capped Llaima Volcano towers over the park, offering an unforgettable backdrop for photographs. The forests, meanwhile, invite visitors to take leisurely walks, whether to enjoy the birdsong or to marvel at the local wildlife, which includes foxes, pudús, and various bird species such as the black woodpecker.

The weather in Conguillío can be somewhat unpredictable, with sudden temperature changes and frequent rain. Even so, every ray of sunshine that illuminates the forest highlights the intensity of the green and creates magical, postcard-worthy scenes. For those seeking greater adventures, winter offers snowy landscapes ideal for snowshoeing or backcountry skiing in permitted areas.

Conguillío is a true natural treasure, perfect for those who wish to immerse themselves in the pristine nature of the Araucanía, walk among giants with millennia-old trunks, and contemplate the powerful presence of the Llaima volcano. Every step on its trails is a reminder of the beauty and strength that characterize southern Chile.
